Heading 1
I have always drawn, kept notebooks, and picked up found objects that caught me eye. Returning to the simplicity of making marks on paper with a pencil, I revisit my collection and the memories associated with the find - hauling something from a riverbank or crouching down on the beach among the sand seaweed and beach detritus.
I explore them through a process of play; Sometimes drawing their outline, turning, mirroring, creating patterns; at other times they act as talismans that lead into the unconscious mind. It feels like a form of mental archaeology, digging down through the layers, with an ebb and flow between the conscious mind and the unconscious, which I explore through drawing. It is reminiscent of riding a wave; you can't control the ocean, but you can try to develop some sensitivity and to follow its rhythms.
My work at the moment is large scale at a metres plus square. Perhaps this will change as winter brings its' contracting force!
Mark making instruments form a collection of their own: powders, putty, tapes, erasers, cloths, brushes, edges, curvy things, charcoal, graphite, crayons, pens, stencils, and the humble pencil.
